Your student exchange in Canada

The second-largest country in the world, the country with the longest coastline—superlatives that impress. Vast forests, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Lakes, bears, moose, big cities, and two national languages make Canada a dream destination. A very good school system and a proven school culture characterized by praise and motivation secured Canada one of the top spots in the global PISA study. The diverse opportunities to learn English and French make it particularly attractive for German and Swiss students. Everyday school life in Canada

You can spend your student exchange at semester schools (four subjects taught daily for one semester) or linear schools (eight subjects taught throughout the school year). The timetables are individually tailored to each student, so there is no fixed class structure. In addition to academic subjects like math, history, or English, there are many other interesting subjects that are rare in Germany that you can discover during your student exchange. In addition to the regular school subjects, there are numerous clubs such as photography, computer science, theater, and numerous sports activities. Many schools offer so-called academies. Here, individual subjects or sports are specifically promoted and taught intensively, usually for an additional fee. For example, there are ice hockey academies, soccer academies, skiing/snowboarding academies, dance academies, theater academies, or film academies.

  • Felix's time in Canada

Hello, my name is Felix and I spent a high school year on Vancouver Island. I originally wanted to spend a semester at a high school in New Zealand, but due to the border closures during the Corona pandemic, this was unfortunately not possible. Luckily, I quickly found a replacement, and so I decided on the Qualikum District on Vancouver Island, a beautiful island on the west coast of Canada. When my agency suggested I take part in the ROAMS program offered there, I was immediately excited. This meant that I attended high school as usual for one semester and then, in the second semester, I was able to take part in an extensive outdoor program: climbing, kayaking, swimming, rafting, sea kayaking, and surfing, with many multi-day trips in a group of around 20 young people. In addition to a comprehensive leadership course and a first aid course, we also had the opportunity to obtain various certificates, such as raft guide, lifeguard, or a food safety certificate. Since you can choose your own subjects in Canada, I chose subjects for the first semester that aren't available in Austria, like Media Arts, Electronics, and Cooking. I really enjoyed the classes. Living with my host family was a fantastic experience, and I had the opportunity to share a lot with them. I had a wonderful time and made many friends. I was so busy the whole time that I barely had time to think about my home in Austria. I could hardly believe it when the 10 months were over and it was time to say goodbye. Once I got home, returning to my daily life back home was still easy, and I notice every day how I'm benefiting from my year abroad! It was the coolest time of my life! Felix, 16 years old (10 months in Canada)
